Changes and motivation

Changes in what we do (work) and how we do (processes) are unavoidable in everyday business life. Success can be reached if Your business makes changes and adapts to the change of situation (customers, competitors, supplier and etc.). Motivation to get better results drives us to take an action.

Motivation at individual level can be manageable but the problem usually is in organization: how to motivate each team member during times of change.

From “my best interest” to “company’s best interest”

Let’s take an example of everyday business life: a new business strategy is announced. In a long term this strategy will help each team member be more efficient and productive: to do, sell, produce more. But first of all it means changes.

Individually team members will think – how to survive this change (my best interest), because new strategy brings obscurity and discomfort. The biggest challenge of team leader is to change this set of mind – from individual interest to company’s best interest.

Changes start from leader

Leader is the one (or should be) with the biggest motivation to make changes in company’s life. So, if You are one, start from Yourself.

  • Establish new priorities and start immediately act according them. You should be an example to all the team.
  • Accept that You will need to change Your agenda. Give up old work habits and develop new once considering new priorities or strategy.
  • Changes require alteration in work patterns. Show Your team members better ways to accomplish their tasks.
  • Create motivation system based on goals to each team member individually. Some people is motivated to perform best when they have clear daily goals, other needs weekly or monthly goals.
