Delegation. Pain or beauty?
Someone likes very much to drop duties to employees or contrary,
someone thinks that he does job best and other person will ruin it.
Which way is right?
Delegate is important
I will start from the last, as it is obvious. If somebody does not delegate any part of his job, he ceases grow himself.
Why?
Because in such case somebody will not find time to take something new. New duties are important. If competitor does something better (faster and or in better quality) somebody will lose his business or job.
Wrong delegation does not bring fruits
When somebody only leaves 3 word tasks to employee, he often finds himself disappointed. Usually it is not done as was expected.
5 why?!
1. Because it was not clear what You exactly wanted. Only do this or that,
2. Maybe it was not clear what was the reason to do this. And if person does not see the reason – he cannot put his experience and vision;
3. Maybe it was not clear how to do it? People usually have some skills and much more they don’t. Work environment changes very fast;
4. Maybe delegated task was nasty to person. People of extravert’s nature, will not enjoy a day of digging a data. Some people lack spirit, character or developed personal skills to take more farseeing duties and it is an error to increase their responsibilities;
5. Maybe person had too much of delegated tasks and he could not grasp in proper speed which is important or what are priorities.
Right delegation creates result, comfort atmosphere, fulfilled expectations.
Only 3 things to be done:
1. Give clear and described tasks. Sometimes people get into perfect communication, then task description looses its value. But when You find that miscommunication arose – get back to correct tasks. Explain reason – it inspires much more than a dull work.
2. Check before delegation – what Your experience says about skills of person to whom You delegate. If you feel and know that skills are too little – then show how to do it, or delegate to person with skills or right nature (see DISC or MBTI for details)
3. Align priorities. Check the list of tasks: are they real (hours not exceeding labor work timetable), not too little and not too big. Agree on sequence of tasks to do .
Mind stretch is always painful
Keep in mind! It is hard to accept new duties for other people same as for You.
Some people say they can take new duties easily. If there is a feeling of ease – no new is learned. Muscles get pain only after harder trainings than before.
That’s why people void new duties, overspend time, postpone.
I wouldn’t expect cherry mood of employee who accepts new duties. Maybe in the very beginning and in the very end.
Long long middle consists of his:
- building of self-confidence that he can fulfill it,
- concentration to learn subject until skill is demonstrated,
- discipline to progress with task consistently,
- creativity to find more than 1 way if task is not that easy and,
- persistence to accomplish it to the very end.
It is not that funny at all.
